Hybrid Electric Car
When talking about a hybrid car, people usually refer to it
as a hybrid electric car. This is because the most
popularly accepted combination of hybrid cars is fuel and
electricity. The fuel is used to run generators in the
car that in turn charge battery cells so that the car runs on
electricity. This is probably the most popular
combination that manufacturers have come up with in the race to
make the most fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly
car.
The Trend
The hybrid electric car trend seems to be
picking up as more car manufacturers are adding their own
versions to help free the environment from carbon dioxide
emissions. The first mass produced hybrid electric
car was release by Toyota. Dubbed the Toyota Prius,
it first went on sale in Japan in 1997. Demand for
it brought worldwide sales of the Prius in 2001. By
this time, it had retained a sedan-like design that was
something between a Toyota Echo and a Toyota
Corolla. By 2004, a redesign slotted it as a
hatchback and thus a car fit for city streets. It is
certified as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero-emission
vehicle. This is a certification given to cars that
help in the reduction of pollution, most of them being
hybrid cars. Other car manufacturers that are
closely following this trend are Honda, Ford, and even
Chrysler to name a few.
The Popularity
At present, hybrid cars are not as famous as their
counterparts. People are still dependent on fuel and it
will take some time before everybody can get acquainted with a
totally different standard. Americans, in particular,
have become far more comfortable driving around in large and
noisy SUVs, the engine sounds and the vehicle power having
become quite comfortable an experience for them. Hybrid
electric cars are much quieter and do not have the same
effect. This may seem trivial to most people but this is
actually one of the reasons most people will not easily give up
their conventional and more powerful cars for slightly weaker
hybrids. SUV manufacturer Chrysler has answered this with
their release of a hybrid SUV that sports a powerful HEMI
engine; it’s a 5.7 liter V8 SUV that is a hybrid but it still
remains to be seen if the public will welcome this as it draws
criticism from both hybrid and non-hybrid enthusiasts.
The Future
The hybrid electric car is set to become the way of the
future. This vehicle technology is quickly being embraced
by Japan and China and some parts of Europe as well. For
America, it will take some time and US manufacturers have yet
to win the hearts of drivers of conventional, purely
fuel-driven cars. If companies can somehow manage to
marry the technology with personality (the general public sees
the car as a kind of status symbol) then there might be hope
for the fuel situation yet. After all, it is a known fact
that countries around the world have to take responsibility in
promoting green energy which is something that the US will
learn eventually.
