Advantages

1. Anti-rebound bar that stabilizes during collision

Only a limited number of companies offer the anti-rebound bar that stabilizes a car seat during collision. This is done by reducing the rotation in a front-end crash. In a rear-end crash, it also prevents the baby’s head from impacting on the back of the seat.

2. Snug fit for newborns — even preemies

The Britax Chaperone caters to quite a wide weight range. The wings in the head area has an adjustable harness that cradles the baby’s head well. The car seat accommodates babies as small as 4 lbs and with the padded foam insert, it gives a “fit” for smaller babies. It’s different harness slots allow some babies to grow in their seats.

3. Easy to install and use

Installation of the Chaperone car seat is easy for both the seat belt and the latch. The lock-off in the belt is user friendly and helps reduce the tilt associated with installing a car seat with the shoulder belt.

4. No re-thread harness

The no-thread harness is easy to use and gives less opportunity to miss putting up the harness straps when its time to adjust up for growing babies. A flap at the back is used to adjust harness height without disassembling the unit.

Disadvantages

1. Costly infant car seats

The Chaperone infant car seat is quite expensive at $230 considering that babies grow fast and may outgrow their car seats. Although the fabric is of high quality and soft for newborns, it is not washable by machine and entails more work in the long run.

2. Chaperone is a poor fit in some cars

Though there is a wide spectrum of toddlers that can fit in the Chaperone car seat, it also is the reason for poor fit in some vehicles. For cars that have narrow seats both in the front and back, the infant seat needs to be installed behind the seat where a tall person normally stays. It may not work in some situations.

3. Instructional manuals on car seat is inconvenient

In most cases, it is an advantage to have instructions on the car seat itself. However, the tether on which it is placed is short enough to allow readability.

4. Extra weight of car seat – 10 lbs

One of the least favorite of a parent is installing a car seat that weighs heavily and at 10 lbs., it is quite that. For parents who don’t need to shuffle around the infant seat between cars, then this is not a real concern. However, transferring from one vehicle to another is quite a feat.

Product Details

- for infants weighing between 4 – 30 lb.

- includes a padded foam/low birth weight foam insert to properly fit

         smaller babies.

- No re-thread harness system

- Anti-rebound base that stabilizes rotational force in some types of crashes

However, the cost is fairly high running to about $400 for the car seat and base. It is a fantastic car seat that will make families happy — keeping babies safe on the road when installed and used correctly. If you’re in the market for top-of-the-line infant seats, this is the model to be considered.

Advantages

1. Car Seats that are Certified Safe Fabrics

The car seats are made with foam and fabric certified by Oeko-Tex ® Standard 100 as being safe for infants and toddlers. The G2 model complies with the international standards that sets limits on about 200 potentially harmful substances and chemicals that can be found in our children’s products. In using foam and fabrics that meet this standard, it helps ensure that our babies are safer and healthier while making the environment better.

2. Car Seats that are Toxin-Free Flame Retardants

Fabric Certification is very important to the baby gear industry since state and federal safety laws require all car seats to implement strict flame retardant standards. Although manufacturers meet these requirements, most have treated their fabrics with brominated and chlorinated chemicals that can be toxic for children. Orbit’s Baby products meet all the retardant standards without these potentially harmful substances.

3. Sleek, Ultra-Modern Look

The Orbit baby seats are designed with ergonomic flexible carrier handles that allow parents to carry the infant close to your body. It’s Paparazzi Shield extension on the carrier protects the babies from the sun, wind and other natural elements especially when carrying outdoors. It’s high quality materials are soft to touch which offers a more comfortable surface than hard plastic edges in other seats. Design wise, it’s appearance shows a leaner car seat compared to the bulkier designs of others. It’s ergonomic handling (easy carry, rotation and undock system) allows comfort especially in travel.

4. Base is Easy to Install

Infant car seats have quite tricky installation instructions but not on Orbit baby car seats. The large and flat area on the base of the seat doesn’t give it enough room to wobble or angle off and the belt pathways are wide enough and easy to use. The car seat can be put into any direction on the base and rotated until it locks into —- proper rear-facing position ready for travel.

The SmartHub™ docking ring used on its base allows 360 degree flexibility in docking onto the base. The instructional manuals are very user friendly including pictures on how to install.

Disadvantages

1. Base is heavy at about 15lbs

In as much as the base is incredibly easy to install, it’s trade off is that it is really heavy weighing to about 15 lbs. It’s something you really would not want when you’re shuffling between cars.

2. Re-thread harness to change harness height

As your infant gets older, changes in the car seats need to be adopted for constant protection and comfort for the little ones. In buckling the baby, there’s only one buckle position in between the baby’s legs but three (3) harness height slots to accommodate the growth changes in your infant. Changes in the harness height means you need to unzip back covers, removing the harness of it’s plate and re-threading to the proper slot. It’s not something of a big deal as many car seat products apply this system. However, for one that’s pricey, a hassle-free no-rethread harness is something that should have been in the works.

3. One of the most expensive Baby car seats available at about $400.

The Orbit Baby Infant Car Seat and Base G2 is pricey and for one to enjoy the full benefits of the Orbit Baby G2 travel system, you’ll need to add more dollars to purchase the stroller frame. However, if quality and convenience is your top priority, then this is a sound investment for your baby.

So, you haven’t got that Hybrid car your setting your eyes on. Big Deal! The important thing is that we’re trying to save the planet and catching up on the go green lifestyle. Since cars are indispensable to daily living, why not start up with some eco friendly products to accessorize your car. Besides, it is a small trade off considering that cars are a major source of air pollution.

Many of these eco friendly car accessories are made available to suit our individual needs. Here are some of our recommendations based on consumer reviews on the most popular eco friendly car products.

ECO FRIENDLY BABY CAR SEATS

In most expectant mothers, a list of baby essentials is a must. Some things are considered necessities – one you cannot absolutely live without when having a baby.

In general, car seats are a necessity for safety in motor vehicles. Strict car safety regulation has challenged the development of eco friendly car seats that is safe for our babies and safe for the planet.

Eco friendly baby car seats address the problems associated with potential harmful substances which our babies are exposed to as found in some of these car seats. The need for chemically safe materials that ensure a healthier baby and a healthier environment is the prime goal for these products.

WATERLESS CAR WASH PRODUCTS

One of the major environmental concerns we face globally is shortage of water. As an alternative solution, the rise of waterless car wash products is gaining popularity. Not only does it use less water (which is a greener practice) but hardly any water at all. Of all the things eco friendly, these waterless car wash products are considered safe and a biodegradable alternative to using soap and water.

Washing your car is one of the most environmentally unfriendly chores. Studies show that even the most experienced home car washer uses more water than commercial car washes. Water residue from the wash flow into storm drains that eventually go into our rivers and seas, destroying ecosystems. More so when the car wash products we use are not chlorine and phosphate-free and petroleum based. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&x=0&tag=hybridcarsinformation-20&linkCode=ur2&y=0&camp=1789&creative=9325&field-keywords=waterless%20car%20wash&url=search-alias%3Dautomotive

Waterless car wash products are especially good for handling small dirt jobs as they can be easily sprayed unto and wiped with a cloth.

ECO FRIENDLY FLOOR MATS

Eco friendly practices does not only involve the use of products that are both safe for us and the environment but also practices pertaining to use and reuse (recycle).

Car floor mats are indispensable since they protect the interior from mud, sand, snow and dirt keeping our cars in better condition and ultimately keep the resale of our car high.

Eco friendly car mats are made of recyclable rubber tires that provide the same commercial quality and durability we expect in an all weather car mats.

Here’s a birds-eye-view of reviews, test drives and auto ratings of whats available in the market today.

2012 FORD FUSION HYBRID

The Fusion Hybrid is considered one of the best hybrid cars in the industry due to its superb performance, fuel economy and high-tech interior. Although it’s specs are considered fairly conventional by hybrid standards, the mix of motor paired with batteries acting as an electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT) gives the sedan an edge — a V6 powered car but with the fuel of a four cylinder.

The integration of the company’s hybrid hardware is outstanding. Shifting from electric to gas power is very smooth. Fusion can speed up to 47 mph on sole battery power and can almost reach up to 700 miles of driving on a single tank of gas.

2012 CHEVROLET VOLT

The Chevrolet Volt is one of the best hybrid upscale mid-size cars due to its impressive fuel economy. It is an electric car that is quite unique a it runs on two sources of energy namely a battery and a gas generator. It’s electric source sans lithium-ion battery can let you drive without gas for about 25-50 miles (40-80 km). When it’s batteries run low, it’s built in gas generator allows an additional 375 miles of driving on a full tank.

2012 HYUNDAI SONATA HYBRID

The Sonata Hybrid ranks as one of the top hybrid performing cars for it’s good economy on fuel, smooth transmission and other standard capabilities adding value among the hybrids.

It has the technology and fuel saving capacity and still be on budget. It has been priced less than most of its competitors. Using lithium polymer batteries for it’s electric propulsion system and a responsive interface with solid navigation, phone and audio system makes it up as a great affordable mid-size car.

2012 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID

The Toyota Camry Hybrid is a family sedan with enhanced driving dynamics coupled with fuel economy. It has a powerful 2.5 liter four cylinder engine that when combined to it’s electric drive motor produces up to a total of 200 horsepower. It’s regenerative braking system is improved from it’s older models thus, converting more of its braking energy into electricity. It also has a web-based Entune system integrating its audio, navigation system and infotainment features.

2012 TOYOTA PRIUS

The 2012 Prius has excellent fuel economy ratings making it a top car for buyers whose priority is fuel efficiency. For 2012, Toyota introduces the all new Prius plug-in. Battery can be charged in a standard wall outlet. Recharging within a three hour period or less depending on the voltage of the outlet is a plus. The Prius is a car built with a spacious trunk, high-tech electronics and a comfortable ride. Definitely, a car to test drive.

2012 TOYOTA PRIUS V

The Toyota Prius V allows you to own a hybrid — fuel economy matched with a roomier car. It’s spacious backseats and trunk provides the necessary ingredients for a lifestyle that demands the practicality of a wagon.

It uses the same 1.8 liter Atkinson-cycle engine, nickel hydride battery packed with a combined output of 134 horsepower. Toyota’s new Entune infotainment system is made available in the Prius V.

2012 HONDA CIVIC HYBRID

The Civic Honda hybrid is considered an affordable small hybrid car in the market today. It has improved its fuel economy ratings compared to its predecessors. Although the civic hybrid is a good car, some have commented on its interior — one being quite similar to it’s outgoing model. However, one can note that its fuel economy ratings have gone up and has improved its standard features, to name some: power windows and doors, bluetooth, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel.

Although its interior space has increased making it more roomy, reviews and test drives say that it is predictable. The Honda Civic Hybrid is a commuter car and shoppers in the market for something solid and dependable with fuel efficiency in mind should consider this hybrid.

2012 HONDA CR-Z

The Honda CR-Z is a typical hybrid car. It has a great performance being a hybrid but not so practical if your primary concern is fuel consumption since its fuel economy ratings are lower than the other hybrids in the market.

As an affordable small car, its the only hybrid that seats two people. It has a limited cargo space and poor rear visibility as reviewed by most but its interior suggests a sporty environment. As it is a reasonably priced hybrid, this is the car for shoppers who is in the market for a good performing hybrid and does not mind its lower fuel ratings.

2012 MITSUBISHI i

The Mitsubishi i is considered the least priced hybrid in the market today but with its own share of compromises.

It is a compact car that runs less than 70 horsepower which is good solely for city driving. It has no gas tank, thus, producing zero on the road emissions. A 100% electric powered car, Mitsubishi offers an 8-year, 100,000 mile limited warranty on its battery. However, just like any typical electric car owner, it has it share of problems with charging. A Charging station or a wall outlet will take hours to charge a car. Moreover, access to public charging stations is limited based on infrastructure that supports electric vehicle charging. So unless, areas have these in place, it’ll be difficult for driving anywhere outside its range.

2012 HONDA INSIGHT

The 2012 Honda Insight is a hybrid for customers without the high price tag attached to it. It’s 1.3 liter i-VTEC engine is highly efficient and boosts of its 4-cylinder engine that is equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

This car is considered one of the most fuel efficient and affordable hybrids today. It has a futuristic look on the interiors and has a good room for cargo. One unique feature is its Eco Assist that makes the driver aware of his driving style and thus helps you get the most out of your car to enhance efficiency.

2012 KIA OPTIMA HYBRID

The Kia Optima hybrid is a good value car for its high tech features such as rear view camera, satellite radio and other gadgets. The hybrid is a 2.4 liter direct injected gasoline engine and is combined with a lithium ion battery that runs up to 40 horsepower. A combined engine and battery gives out 206 horsepower. However, some reviews suggest improvements on the car especially on its transition between gas and electric motor. Some drivers say the brakes are not that responsive to pedal pressure which gives a concern on safety.

Overall, if you’re shopping for something high tech and stylish and performance is not the sole reason for purchasing a hybrid then this car is a good choice.

Here is a summary about hybrid electric automobiles.

What is a Hybrid Electric Vehicle?

A hybrid electric automobile or HEV is a vehicle that is a combination of a rechargeable energy storage system or RESS and a traditional propulsion system. It saves more fuel and also covers a lot more distance when compared with battery electric automobiles since charging is conducted through a number of techniques instead of a lone external source. The propulsion power systems of various hybrid electric engines may be made up of exactly the same parts or subsystems.

Typical hybrid electric versions come with an ICE or internal combustion engine as well as electric batteries that support the main electric motors. The systems of the HEV have got enhanced substantially using the discovery of regenerative braking in which kinetic energy can be stored. Fuel is conserved more and emission is minimized as much as possible. Drivers get to cover longer ranges too without being concerned about speed and overall performance.

The combustion engine too can generate electric power through a spinning electrical generator. The energy either supplies power directly to the motor or recharges the battery. The internal combustion engine automatically shuts down when idling but immediately restarts as needed. The engine is also considerably smaller which is extremely effective.

Do HEVs Still Use Gas and Diesel?

Gasoline engines will in all probability stay in the hybrid automobile scene for years into the future since it produces power like no other discovered or affordable material can. Petroleum gasoline is known as as the main fuel supply but could be mixed with assorted concentrations of ethanol from other energy sources. HEVs use up around 15% bioethanol like other car engines but producers are currently acquiring ways to improve ratios for elevated fuel efficiency and reduced emission.

You will find diesel electric engines wherein a diesel engine is mainly used to provide power. Diesel can end up being more efficient than gasoline although speed and noise is probably not its best features. Diesel may be better-performing and can produce power for long periods of time without darning on much.

Gasoline consumption can be far better because of its high torque with all the biodiesel. Necessity for petroleum is minimized depending on the type utilized. Although diesel are usually known to drive bigger transportations like trucks, SUVs and vans, hybrid diesel-electric vehicles have also appeared in smaller variations like sedans as well as other passenger vehicles.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle Kinds

Hybrid diesel-electric motorcycles happen to be created having a top speed of around 800 mph with a very economical retail price of $500. A number of known car makers also have joined the bandwagon like Honda, Ford, General Motors, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota. These big names are currently innovating to continually provide well-performing vehicles with all the advantages.

HEVs have been very specific in becoming offered for future taxicab models. As these vehicles are usually on the run all day long, fuel and emission could be improved through automated engine shutdown, regenerative braking and idling. You can find plug-in models by which taxicabs can conveniently recharge batteries at specified stands throughout the city. Plug-in hybrid electric models are also available in the form of sedans and mini-cars.

Hybrid-electric buses and trucks are also becoming more common due to the several positive aspects offered. The diesel engine is smaller meaning it is more efficient. There is also a 1.9-liter diesel engine rather than the 7., emitting less harmful gases. Emission reduction is reported to be around 30% although fuel efficiency is around 40%. Some hybrid-electric buses have gas turbine generators. More efforts are exerted to transform other way of transportation like trains.

Many kinds of HEVs are available today and are being employed in various projects. The military uses diesel-electric hybrid trucks that includes a fuel cell auxiliary power and diesel electric unit. The United States Army started out utilizing hybrid electric drives for those vehicle systems and subsystems. Other notable trucks also have found their purpose in commercial sectors, scientific projects and exploration endeavors.

You have to know a few points first to make certain that you’re obtaining a competent one that best suits the needs you have. Hybrid vehicles are available in many forms today and also operate through various means and systems. Here are a few guidelines which will allow you to select the correct one.

<!--

What Technologies are Available?

1. Idle-off capability is once the engine automatically shuts down if the hybrid vehicle is braking, idling or coasting. The motor could also easily turn back on once the driver lets off the brake and steps on the accelerator.

2. Regenerative braking is when the electric motor takes over if the car is slowing down. What’s more, it greatly improves as a generator in which energy lost as the hybrid vehicle is braking may be converted into electric power that recharges the battery.

3. Power assist and engine downsizing is in the event the electric motor kicks in to help move the auto during acceleration. The size of the engine is virtually smaller since both electric motor and engine combine in giving power.

4. Electric-only is when the electric motor only provides power for the automobile when running at low rates of speed or when starting.

5. Prolonged battery-electric variety is when the electric motor can provide power for the vehicle when running more than a distance of 20 to 60 miles. Soon after, the battery can certainly be recharged by plugging into an external electrical power supply. The gasoline motor starts after the range happens to be covered by the electric motor.

Discover ways to specify the hybrid car you are getting. Mild hybrids make use of the first three technologies pointed out earlier while full hybrids make use of the first four. There’s also plug-in hybrid automobiles which use all 5 but are not yet on the market to the general public.

You can find muscle hybrids that come available as SUVs which can be more cost-effective and eco-friendly in comparison to their standard counterparts. Some hybrid autos could use only a couple of technologies but still try and enhance mileage and ecological consequences.

Questions to Ask

Is it fuel efficient? What’s the normal range that the electric motor may cover before the gasoline engine takes over? Is there idle-off functionality? Check the fuel useage and engine size to determine if the hybrid vehicle you are getting can truly help you save more. Some hybrid vehicles are extremely mild in which a small technology may only be integrated. Saving even 1 to 2 gallons of fuel each day more could be very cost-effective.

Is it green? Check the emission of the vehicle. Hybrids needs to have really low or zero emission which reduces the chance of exhausting greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Uncover the electric motor capabilities since these are the times when gasoline byproducts are averted and reduced. You will find various sources of power available which reduce pollutants like fuel cells, hydrogen and electricity. Find out if these are incorporated in your automobile.

What exactly are the additional features? Look into the interior and exterior of the hybrid vehicle just like you would when buying a conventional one. Determine whether the dimensions is appropriate to your or your family, determine the quality of the materials used if the overall framework is secure for highway driving and compare the advantages and key features with other models. Some hybrids do not look as stylish as gas versions but there are also hybrids that look just like their conventional counterparts.

Just how much is it? The initial sum of buying a hybrid vehicle is usually higher compared to conventional cars. However, you will discover that you could easily make up for the initial cost by saving more about fuel. Again, you need to confirm the mileage, rate of consumption and possible tax deductions to see if the hybrid can really be cost-effective within the years to come. Also consider repair and maintenance expenses later on.

Advantages to consider When choosing

The United States Federal government offers significant tax breaks to those who choose hybrid vehicles. The tax break will depend on the tax bracket when the buyer sends a file. You will find states that provide special parking areas as well for hybrid vehicles so drivers get to spend less on parking fees. Some insurance policies may provide special deals to owners of hybrids on repair and maintenance too.

There are SULEVs or super ultra low-emission automobiles, ULEVs or ultra low-emission vehicles and PZEVs or partial zero emission vehicles that are very clean and quiet. Drivers get to enjoy smooth and peaceful driving without the environmental hazards and risks. Some of the largest automobile manufacturers are greatly committing to hybrids with very stylish and powerful models that can go up against the best gasoline-powered ones.

Although petrol engines may comprise the majority at the moment, hybrids may be required more in the days to come.

Gasoline Engine Consequences

Gasoline engines are actually quite convenient and well-performing through the years. So far, technology or fuel that can match its power may still be undiscovered or too costly for regular individuals to utilize on a day-to-day basis. However, gasoline engines have showed to be quite potent in harming environmental surroundings as a result of emissions.

Emissions or tailpipe emissions refer to the harmful un wanted gas produced after gasoline is burnt during combustion. Samples of the harmful gases released into the atmosphere are carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides. These gases can be very detrimental to the health of many causing a variety of respiratory and systemic problems.

They are also referred to as greenhouse gases for generating the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect occurs once the gases continue to accumulate and trap heat in the atmosphere. Heat is supposed to openly move out into space but the congestion of greenhouse gases instead trap it on the earths atmosphere which leads to global warming. Surface air temperatures as well as sub-surface ocean temperatures begin to rise which may also be detrimental to the people and environment.

Crude oil is the raw material required so as to produce gasoline that fuels classic motors. Nevertheless, it’s also starting to become rarer as sources are being depleted by users from all over the world. The most notable countries that produce crude oil are hoped for to undergo an all-time low in the next decade which clarifies why oil prices are continuously growing.

Some gasoline-powered vehicles are also extremely expensive to maintain as a result of extremely high gas consumption or low mileage. In in the future, people may struggle to afford several or any gasoline engine vehicle at all.

What Do Hybrids Supply?

Primarily, hybrids are extra efficient and energy-conserving since these operate on alternate fuel sources. Hybrids don’t require much gasoline or do not run using gasoline at all depending on the type and model. People then get more which can truly help the economic system.

Based on research by the U.S. Energy Department, hybrids in the United States alone can reduce demand for oil by as much as 11 million barrels daily within the next three decades. Hybrids truly define cost-effectiveness although people may have to sacrifice performance and style for effectiveness.

The environmental benefits of hybrid cars are also its main highlight. Hybrid vehicles have very low emissions and use of energy reducing the greenhouse effect significantly. The vehicles run on a variety of alternate fuel sources with respect to the type such as electricity, fuel cell and hydrogen. Energy can be recaptured or stored when braking, slowing down or coasting. The definition of is also called regenerative braking.

The battery storage capacity is larger making it easy to store energy for future use. Although some models still partly rely on gasoline or diesel engine, there are mechanisms where the engine immediately stops or shuts while idling or coasting just to save more gas and energy. Since hybrids change fuel sources depending on the speed and range covered by the car, there will be fewer opportunities for combustion byproducts to be released into the atmosphere. Emission are going to be kept minimal or at a zero stage.

Other Benefits of Hybrid Vehicles

Appearance may not be the best trait of most hybrids, they are less expensive without compromising quality or performance. The alternate fuel sources are also easy to maintain so users then spend less along the way of owning one. You will find tax breaks provided for buyers since the government is enticing almost all to start purchasing environmentally friendly automobiles.

Performance is very satisfactory and hybrids are quieter and cleaner. There’s also specific parking spaces provided by the government. Comparing the gas consumption of a hybrid vehicle and a gasoline engine one will truly show the main difference in economic system and efficiency.

You might be surprised to know that the thought of creating hybrid automobiles stemmed as long ago as the time of Leonardo da Vinci. Electric vehicles were around the world ahead of gasoline engines found their way on public roads. Here’s some of the quick look over the history of hybrid vehicles.

The Early Centuries

Leonardo da Vinci first regarded flying machines incorporating airfoils and engines although it only agreed to be around 400 many years later when it had been recognized by the Wright brothers.

In 1665, Ferdinand Verbiest planned a four-wheeled vehicle that could run on steam or have a horse pull it. Verbiest continued to figure on this initial hybrid model for 15 years. In 1769, Nicholas Cugnot developed a steam-powered carriage able to run at no more than 6 mph. Long distance travel wasn’t viable for the Frenchman’s hybrid project.

In 1839, Robert Anderson created an electric-powered car. It was well-functioning but had flaws like short distance coverage in addition to a battery power that still needs development when it comes to re-charging. In 1870, Sir David Solomon created a lighter motor for a carriage but the battery power was still very hard to recharge.

Through the 1880s, London traders were eyeing on creating an electrical taxicab which will possess a 28-cell battery system that drives a compact electric motor. The ideas didn’t go too far but aided develop the 40-cell battery and 3-horsepower electric motor that taxicabs had in 1897.

The vehicles were known as Bersey Cabs after Walter Bersey, their inventor. The battery power was considerably much better as well therefore the vehicles could run up to fifty miles before needing to be recharged. A year later, Porsche created the very first internal combustion and electric hybrid engine. On battery power alone, the Loner Electric Chaise could go forty miles.

The 20th Century

Pieper from Belgium designed a gas and electric hybrid which has a 3.5 horsepower motor linked to an electric motor. The engine was situated underneath the seat. The electric motor supports the gas engine when attempting to move up steep inclines. In 1905, Piper from the United States received a patent for a design reminiscent to that of Pieper.

In 1910, the company, Commercial Built Trucks produced a four-cylinder gas engine powered by a generator. The invention became better so battery packs and transmission were no longer needed. Hybrid cars reached their peak in 1912, outselling gasoline engine vehicles at a ratio of 2:1. However, the 1920s turned out to be a difficult time as Henry Ford introduced mass manufacture of gasoline engines. Prices of gasoline-powered vehicles were at an all-time low spurring people to invest. Electric and hybrid vehicles went through over a 50-year hiatus.

In 1969, hybrid vehicles again found their way into the limelight as combustion engines showed environmental and economic flaws. General Motors designed a car that functioned solely on electric power at 10 mph. From 10 to 13 mph, the car travels on both gas combustion and electric power. Above 13 mph, the gas engine fully takes over. In 1973, Volkswagen created the hybrid Taxi which will efficiently switch back and forth between a gas engine and an electric motor. In 1975, American Motors developed electric-powered vans that sadly were not very prosperous.

In 1979, Dave Arthur’s improved on the hybrid model and designed a mix by using a 6-hp lawn mower engine, several six-volt batteries and a 400-amp electric motor. The hybrid managed to have fuel useage of 75 mpg. In 1989, Audio come up with Audi Duo using a 12.6-hp electric engine backed up by a nickel cadmium battery. The front wheels of the Audi Duo were powered by a 2.3-liter 5-cylinder gasoline engine while the rear wheels were powered with the electric motor.

Dawn of a New Period

In 1997, the Toyota Prius was introduced to the market and was the very first important mass marketed hybrid vehicle all over the globe. The Prius was initially marketed in Japan and sold around 18,000 in the first year alone. In 1999, the Honda Insight surfaced featuring a lightweight two-door style. It had a fuel useage of 61 mpg in the city and 70 mpg on the highway.

In 2000, the Toyota Prius entered the United States which was the 1st four-door sedan hybrid in the country. In 2002, the Honda Civic Hybrid arrived featuring similar appearance and drive abilities as its conventional counterpart.

In 2004, the Toyota Prius II was produced and accepted by the American market with open arms requiring maximum production. The Ford Escape Hybrid emerged in the same year which is the very first SUV hybrid. Increasingly more companies are becoming a member of in because of the relative advantages and need. It is only dependent on time before hybrids will rule the scene the same as they did one hundred years ago.

A Brief Description

A hybrid vehicle or HV is a means of transportation using several different sources of power for propulsion. With the recognized available power sources like electricity, gasoline and so on, hybrid vehicles features combining these with the intent to become more cost-effective, convenient and ecological. Types of other power sources will be air and internal combustion engines, fuel cells, battery storage systems and also manual propulsion.

Mopeds and electric bicycles are a couple of the primary forms of hybrid incorporating both manual propulsion and electric power or internal combustion engine to successfully run. The model incorporated a series hybrid bicycle also which leads to generator power after the pedals happen to be manually rotated. The effect would be electricity providing enough power to somewhat of a motor without the need of chains that classic bicycles have got.

There are also hybrid automobiles in larger forms like power trains using a combination of diesel, electric or hydraulic motor. Heat engines will start to power electric generators or perhaps a hydraulic pump in order to support multiple electric or hydraulic motors.

The usage of wires and pipes are also more efficient as it preserves more energy compared to several mechanical elements requiring stronger sources for energy. Electric trains have evolved with the discovery of dual modes which shift between diesel and electric power as well as dual voltage features so that the train can operate on numerous rail systems.

Drive train Variations

Parallel hybrid systems are the most typical on the market which combines an enclosed combustion engine or ICE and an electric motor that connects to a mechanical transmission. Some models use a motor and an electrical generator in a single unit. A battery pack with high voltage is used to store energy and power. The two power sources are mechanically coupled. Parallel hybrids may be described according to the balance of various parts in generating power for motion. Usually, the ICE is much more prominent while the electric runs after some assistance.

Series hybrids are called REEV or Range-Extended Electric Vehicles which have a design more reminiscent with a BEV or battery electric vehicle. The combustion engine powers an electric generator in a series hybrid system instead of the wheels. The generator powers an electric motor while also charging the battery.

High amounts of power cause the motor to get electricity from the batteries and generator. There is no mechanical connection between the wheels and the combustion engine, making it run more efficiently. However, the power coming from the engine needs to run through the electric motor and generator first making it less efficient on long trips.

Combined hybrid vehicles incorporate both the traits of parallel and series hybrids. Power-split devices are used in order to create a link between the engine and the wheels mechanically or electrically. The main feature is the decoupling of the power supplied by the engine or other sources from the power required by the driver.

Hybridization Categories

A full hybrid vehicle is one that will run on solely the engine, batteries or a mix of both. Some cars can be propelled solely through battery power which then uses the gasoline engine when running at higher speeds or greater distances.

There’s a split power path wherein mechanical and electrical power can be interconverted through a connection between the engine and motor. There might be various modes at which the hybrid engine is running or getting power from like cruise mode, electric vehicle mode, battery mode, power boost mode and negative split setting.

A mild hybrid vehicle has large starter motors so that the engine immediately shuts whenever the vehicle is braking, at a full stop or coasting. Restart is also not at all hard while accessories can still run with the engine off through electrical power. The large motor starts the engine letting it run at operational speeds before any fuel injection occurs.

Other styles are power assist hybrid and plug-in hybrid. Power assist hybrids mostly use the engine while incorporating an electric motor for further assistance. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles or PHEV could be simply plugged into an outlet for recharging. The quantity of energy stored determines the distance and performance capacity of the vehicle.

The fact it could very easily be acquired from water causes it to be one truly cost-effective and ecological solution. Companies and manufacturers are constantly attempting to develop hydrogen with the aim to provide power and efficiency as required by most people.

How Good is Hydrogen?

Hydrogen could be easily produced from several domestic and renewable sources like water. Since crude oil prices are going to an all-time high at present, with the ability to obtain fuel from inexpensive or relatively free sources could positively influence the complete market. Economy and energy security can significantly improve when nations minimize reliance upon foreign oil. As of the present, hydrogen may still be more expensive to produce in comparison to traditional fuel but researchers are constantly innovating ways to make it cheaper to everyone.

Performance is also preserved although may not be as powerful or efficient at present when compared with gasoline-powered vehicles. Emissions make up for the short inefficiencies since hydrogen can help to eliminate it as little as almost zero.

One of the most useful effects of hydrogen is its potential to improve the atmosphere. With recent technology, hydrogen could be safely stored and transported too. As far as efficiency can be involved, hydrogen may greatly boost energy efficiency considering that the typical energy efficiency rate of autos today is close to 18%.

Ideally, hydrogen should still go through several processes to become considered potent enough to perform as well as gasoline. Range and power are two aspects that still need dramatic advancements. Engines these days aren’t yet fully equipped to harness the full potential effects of hydrogen. Efficient use of the resource by engines still needs to be improved as well. Everything generally seems to look promising as hydrogen engines tend to operate leaner and also at higher compression ratios when compared with hydrocarbon fuels.

How Does a Hybrid Hydrogen Vehicle Operate?

Stored electrical energy is drawn as needed by the power demands of the driver when cruising, accelerating and running accessories. The engine like other hybrid models instantly shuts down when completely charged during idle periods of saving fuel and energy.

A single-speed transmission couples the wheels to an electric motor for power train. Regenerative braking is present as well wherein the electric motor becomes a generator once the vehicle is coasting or slowing down. Once the brakes are applied, kinetic energy is stored in the unit for future usage.

Hydrogen-powered vehicles still need to be enhanced in terms of engine and generator so as to produce adequate power to cruise regular speeds and climb like regular gas-powered vehicles. If the engine or generator provides enough power for energy use, then in addition, it functions as a range extender. Now, hybrid hydrogen vehicles continue to be trying to find ways to enhance overall performance and efficiency to match to the likes of hybrid electrics.

The Tradeoff: Hydrogen for Internal Combustion

Fuel cells integrate hydrogen which could efficiently serve as alternate fuel in transforming chemical energy into kinetic or electrical energy. A number of fuel cells can operate purely on hydrogen having superior power-to-weight ratio. Supplying more power relative to heavier load means that hydrogen fuel cell cars are more effective in comparison to internal combustion engines.

There are also no off cuts created because the elements released are naturally occurring in the environment. There should be improvements as to how to properly store and transport hydrogen to create fuel cell production cheaper and affordable to the majority.

A hydrogen economy is foreseen in the near future which targets creating hydrogen in order to supply energy. Since it is one of the most abundant and naturally occurring element in the universe, there can be virtually no shortage in comparison to oil, coal as well as other natural gases.

Combustion characteristics are nonexistent making the atmosphere benefit through the lack of greenhouse gases emitted. Instead of tailpipe emission, energy can be produced from point sources like facilities for mobile applications.

Generally, hydrogen is used up through a chemical reaction without the harmful results of pollution. Hydrogen utilized in fuel cells easily mixes and reacts to provide energy, water and heat. Hydrogen has been referred to as the perfect fuel because of its efficiency, cleanliness and abundance. It is simply a matter of time before it finds its way as a staple on the market.
